How a Scrum Master Keeps a Team Agile

Interviewer: Katrin, could you start by explaining the main differences between a Scrum Master and an Agile Coach, and what these roles entail?

Katrin Lange: Of course. A Scrum Master is part of the Scrum Team, focusing on helping the team adhere to the rules and values of the Scrum Framework and overcoming obstacles. On the other hand, an Agile Coach typically works within the broader organization, guiding the adoption of agile principles and fostering an agile culture.

Interviewer: What specific tasks does a Scrum Master have at BAADER's digital team that differ from those of an Agile Coach, and what does a typical week look like for you at bTrace?

Katrin Lange: As a Scrum Master within the digital team, I ensure the team carries out certain meetings and maintains the values prescribed by the Scrum Framework. Unlike an Agile Coach, who imparts agile principles, coaches teams and leaders, and assists with the implementation of agile methods, my weeks are varied. There's no typical week, but regular Scrum meetings are a constant where I engage with team members to ensure they have the necessary information and tools for their work.

Interviewer: Why do you believe an Agile Coach is necessary for a digital team, instead of sticking to traditional organizational methods?

Katrin Lange: The shift to agile practices often requires a change in mindset and approach from both team members and management. This transition requires courage and trust, which I support as an Agile Coach by constantly reminding of the principles and values and encouraging communication.

Interviewer: Can you give examples of traditional production environments where a Scrum Master or Agile Coach could be beneficial?

Katrin Lange: Agile methods shine in uncertain conditions. Scrum provides a framework that allows incremental product delivery to gather feedback and plan next steps. It's applicable in any area where requirements are not fully known, helping to iteratively develop outcomes. As an Agile Coach, I can help you find the right tool or framework. And maybe it's Scrum.

Interviewer: What particular challenges do you see in integrating Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters into more traditional corporate structures?

Katrin Lange: Changing the way an organization works is always challenging due to cultural differences, existing hierarchies, or resistance to change. Agile Coaches or Scrum Masters can aid in effective communication, provide training, and help define common success criteria. Implementing agile methods successfully requires time, trust, courage, and an acceptance of mistakes.
